There’s nothing I love more than decorating my home with the changing seasons, and although most of my holiday decor is a collection from over the years, I still like to add something new each time I open the decoration box.
This year I found myself browsing on Etsy for inspiration when I came across these cute autumn doormats, and since they looked so simple to make I decided to give it a go myself.
Now, there’s various ways to go about this – the arguably best way involves printing your pattern with a Cricut printer. However, who actually owns one of those unless you’re a small business owner?
Instead, I ordered some stencils from Amazon for under £8, and plain doormats from Ikea for just £3.50 each.
For the paint I used a black weatherproof paint that I had laying around, however you can also use acrylic paint if your doormat is going to sit somewhere covered, or apply a sealer to make it waterproof.
You will need:
- Plain doormat
- Stencils
- Black weatherproof paint OR acrylic paint and a sealant
- Masking tape
- Paint brush
Step 1:
Lay your stencils beside each other so you know how long the finished word will be. Then, tape where the word begins and ends on your doormat. Next, tape the first letter down where your chosen word begins.
Step 2:
Without leaning on the stencil (as the tape doesn’t secure it too tightly), fill it in with your chosen paint.
Step 3:
Gently lift each letter with care to not smudge the paint. When placing the next letter down be sure to not rub against the previous wet letter. You can also wait for each letter to semi-dry if you’re patient.
Step 4:
Allow to dry for 24-48 hours before placing outside to step on.
